Milford house
SOUTH MILFORD, NOVA SCOTIA
The Main Lodge at Milford House held a lot of memories. The same families have been coming to the cabins annually for nearly a century. It was important to the users and the client that the new facility provide that same sense of nostalgia and tradition. Jost Architects was careful to incorporate elements of the original façade and structure with modern conveniences such as more energy efficient systems and a commercial-scale kitchen. Key features, including the deep veranda and large front gable, were replicated while the overall shape and size of the building was revised to suit the more functional layout. In the end, the new Main Lodge was much more functional and somewhat different in appearance from the original Lodge but gave the overall perception that little had changed. Perhaps the greatest success in the minds of the design team was the user comments made when visiting the new building for the first time after the fire: “I thought the Main Lodge burned down?!”
