Community Hub

The scope of work included renovating a portion of a former high school (circa 1880) into a Community Hub for the Town. The program included new space for the local library branch, a maker’s space, band practice room, community program room, food bank, and public lounge space. All was meant to be contained within the allotted 6,500 SF footprint of the old cafeteria, band, storage and washroom areas. A key challenge for the design team was acoustics. The community gymnasium was located on the floor above the proposed community hub space which was a particular concern for the library. The design team minimized the problem by locating the library under the gym storage spaces and positioning the less sensitive areas of the Maker’s Space and Community Rooms under the gymnasium itself. Further acoustic measures such as sound isolators in the acoustic ceiling grid were employed as well.
Besides the design and layout of the space, Jost Architects worked with the Friends of the Library group to choose furniture and fixtures for the Hub. The final product has been well-received by both the public and the Town. The Annapolis Valley Regional Library declared the new branch as the flagship for its regional branches. |
